Thursday - Another Amazing Day

A post from Mrs. Donnelly and Carole Dicton

Work continued on both houses today. Once again the girls blew us away with their work ethic and attitude.

At the Stahl home (Jessica and Christopher) we worked on siding the house, installing hurricane strips, finishing the shed and doghouse, and installing roof support beams. At Alicia's home (the other Habitat Home), we put up the porch ceiling, caulked, primed and painted it, and then did touch-up painting on the rest of the house.

A few more detailed explanations about some of the photos we just posted:

First, the sweat. I think a few of the girls have referenced the heat and sweat in their posts. We hear that temperatures back home are pretty intense, so things may not be all that different down here, but the humidity is super high and we are outside ALL DAY, working very hard. We start each morning at 8 a.m. and work through around noon, when we return to Lagniappe for lunch (a brief escape into AC for about an hour or so). Then back into the blazing heat until about 4.30 or so. We take breaks often and drink LOTS of water. But the sweat still manages to bead-up on on our faces, frequently.

Second, the writing on the shed wall. This is a Habitat tradition in some places. People who have worked on a home write messages, prayers, good wishes, etc., on the beams of a home before the drywall is installed. In this way the home is wrapped in love and home owners are always surrounded by the positive energy of those who contributed to their home. The Scranton Prep group basically built this shed from the ground up. They dug the footings, set the foundation, built the walls, sided the whole thing, did the trim, built the door and installed the hinges for it.

Tonight the girls invited the AmeriCorps volunteers over to our camp and right now they are all playing cards at the next table (some strange game called spoons; there's a lot of shouting and frenzied activity).

After a full night's sleep, we embark upon our last day of work. It will be a bittersweet day - we'll be glad the hard work is finished (for us at least), but sad to leave all the new friends we've made and to leave knowing so much more work here remains to be done.

Hey Caroline, it was great hearing from you last night. Trust that you are well missed by your family. You should all be very proud of what you've accomplished in just 5 days. While many talk the talk about making a difference in someone's life, all of you have walked the walk. That's a big difference. Kudos. And remember, in the words of Jimmy Buffett, "we do it for the stories we can tell", so bring back some great stories that will last a lifetime. Love, Mom, Dad, Teresa, James and Brownie.

Claire and All,

Q. How do you eat an elephant?
A. One bite at a time.

There is much left to do there but you made a difference in someone's life - you took a bite out of the elephant which is Katrina.

You should all be very proud of yourselves. Your families, your school and your community are very proud of you.

Hurry home!

Claire's Dad

Sarah and everyone else working in less than desirable conditions,
Just remember girls if the football team complains about the heat at workouts-just ask them what they built today. Congrats to everyone, you all made a difference in the lives of many. AND I am sure you have all had fun and have a journal filled with great stories. Keep drinking that H2O. See you soon, Love Aunt Jill & Zeek

Hi Bridget,
If you are reading this it means that you have finished your last day of work. We are so proud of you and what the entire Prep Team has accomplished. Your desire to return to Mississippi even before you've left is a true indication that the spirit of giving is inside you and we know that it will remain because you have always been the sweetest, most giving girl in the world! Enjoy your day on Saturday. We can't wait to see you. We love you so much, Mom & Al xoxo

Caroline,
Just two more days and I can't wait! Soon I will be counting hours, then we will be at the airport and it will be minutes...
How was your last day of work, you all must feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment. I wonder how many of you will be Habitat volunteers in the future, probably quite a few. Dinner tonight w/ Papa at Colorusso's. Grammy, James and the Todd's to a Yankees game. He can't wait to see you. Cross your fingers that we get an invite to Grammy's on Sunday, think meatballs... In case that doesn't pan out, what do you want to do? Mrs. McGregor and I were swimming at Cognetti's yesterday and wondered if you all would like to stop somewhere together and eat, or just get home and get together next week. Let me know, OK? Also, pitch the towels, shorts, anything with paint on it, and the sheets, unless they'll do for cheer camp, unless something has sentimental value to you Carol Hughes called today to see how you're doing, suggested 8-14 for pics, how does that sound to you? We moved the divider in Browny's crate, she is sooooo big.
Well, I hope you have a fun weekend, hope you find some great shops. Maybe you'll find a nice momento or keepsake that you'll always treasure. Anyway, happy shopping. Oh, and what about Hershey on Monday, are you still up for that? I can't decide, please advise. Love you Merry,
